Our Casual Culture

My mother used to tell me about the days when people dressed up to go to the bank. And they’d definitely dress up when going to a restaurant. Nowadays you’re lucky if you don’t run into people still wearing their pajamas in public. We’ve come a long way, baby!

You can see this steady trend toward the casual throughout history, and frankly, slob that I am, I am glad of it up to a point. I’d hate to be living in the time of whalebone corsets and gloves. I can’t imagine needing assistance to get dressed every day. But on the other hand, I think it’s a little much to be wandering around the grocery store with your hair still in curlers or your bunny slippers still on your feet. I’ve seen that more than once. I’ve even seen a girl, I kid you not, shaving her legs in a Walmart.

It seems that we care less and less about what other people think of us. And I really do think that some affectations are antiquated. I think neck ties and panty hose are silly and a waste of money. But I fear that we’ll reach a point where we wander around wearing whatever we rolled out of bed with. And believe me when I tell you that you don’t want to see me first thing in the morning. It might frighten your children.
