Dammit Robin WIlliams!

Well, the news just broke that we have lost another amazing talent. And it’s quite obvious that the world was unaware of the depth of his suffering. That makes me sad.

Robin Williams was successful, creative, extremely intelligent, talented, funny, and full of life. He was so loved. He had so much going for him. And yet he cut his own life short. We will never know the true nature of his struggles. I hope that he has found peace.

Having said that, I just have to add that suicide pisses me off. It is the most selfish, cruel act that one person can inflict upon those around him. It is heartless, thoughtless and mean. It says, “My suffering is so bad that I’d rather cause you to suffer instead.” And for people like me, who have struggled with low grade depression our entire lives and yet have muddled through, persevered, and kept on living, it’s the ultimate insult. So I’m angry at this man whom I admired so much.

If all those gifts that Robin Williams was given still did not result in happiness, then what does it take? Is there any point in trying to achieve excellence? What are we all working toward? Perhaps we need to shift our focus and reprioritize.

It is just such a waste. SUCH a waste.

  1. Ditto!

  2. Sometimes people commit suicide “at” someone, as a sort of revenge, but not always. I don’t know which was the case here. I would never try to compel someone to cling to an unbearable existence for my sake, or consider it an insult that they did not have the same inner resources, or whatever, that I do. Still, you are right that some sort of reprioritizing needs to be done, so that society quits failing to help people in need.
When Kurt Cobain killed himself, my response was “What did he have to complain about, he’s rich!” But for every rich person with unrevealed problems, how many poorer people face the same struggle, and meet similar ends, and their deaths go ignored?

    1. Good points, all Kerik, as usual, but as one who has struggled in the depths of despair on more than one occasion myself, I’ve learned that these things are cyclical, so you just have to hold on. And no matter how tempting it would be to take the easy exit, I could never, even in the blackest of holes, be that cruel to the ones I love. There are enough photos of him genuinely smiling and laughing to know that it wasn’t unbearable 100 percent of the time. I just wish he had held on. And yeah, it’s definitely 1000 times worse for people who are poor, who have the added stress of having to pull themselves out of that quicksand of depression to struggle to survive as well.

  3. I am so with you on this… if a rich, famous, loved person gives up, what hope do the poor, lonely people have? Not to mention it is a horrible thing to do to your own family.

    1. And he had three kids, too. They’re adults, but still. So cruel. So selfish. So sad.

  4. The number of people who were saddened by this news – I can’t even begin to count them. It was such a blow because knowingly or unknowingly, someone becomes a part of your life whether you know them or not. Such a blow and it saddens me to know that someone could be so lonely in the middle of a loving circle!

    1. That’s the scary thing about it.
