Oh, The Places You’ll Go!
Today is the day I embark upon my epic journey to change my life, so I am reminded of one of my favorite books. When someone I know graduates, one of my very favorite gifts to give them is the book “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss. This short book is packed with wisdom. It actually comes from a commencement speech Dr. Seuss gave once upon a time. It must have been magical to sit in that audience.
I keep this book nearby and read it every once in a while. It reminds me to not allow myself to get stuck in the waiting room of life. It’s important to take chances and make moves, even though, as Seuss asserts, things won’t always work out the way you plan.
This book is very much on my mind right now as I’m about to embark on a journey across the continent, to a new job and a new life and a new future. (Help me take my chance and make my move by going here.) Who knows how it will work out? However it does, I’m sure I’ll be thinking of various passages from this lovely book. Right now, I’m thinking of this one:
So…
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!
If you’ll like to see the most amazing performance of this story, check out this video, which was done at the Burning Man Festival in 2011. It’s very Seuss-ian and a delight to watch. (For those of you who are getting this blog via e-mail, the video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIwE-ECjbx8 )
You’re coming at the perfect time of year. But, bring an umbrella – it’s coming.
Yeah. That will take some getting used to.
Love the video.
It’s very cool. Despite the heat.
I know people who go… I never made it
Me neither. And as heat intolerant as I am…
me too
