The View from a Drawbridge

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I LOVE learning new things! Somehow, during my random meanderings down the cyber highway, I came across a story about a mountain village in a remote region of Turkey where the people use a very interesting form of communication. They call it the bird language, and in fact Kuşköy roughly translates as bird village.

Sort of like yodeling, this loud whistling is a fantastic way to communicate throughout the rugged valley, where traveling can be difficult. They use a different whistle for each syllable of the Turkish language, and therefore can easily add new words when needed. Apparently the people in this area have been communicating like this for 400 years, but the language is dying out with the advent of cell phones. What a shame.
