“Art is whatever you can get away with.” I forget who said that, but they nailed it. I too can enjoy stuff that makes me laugh, or think, as well as what just looks pretty to me, but I run into all manner of art that seems to derail thought instead of helping it. I wonder “What the @#$%^&? was that person thinking, and who would actually pay money for it?” This despite I’ve got a couple of bizarre items on my own walls that I’m sure no one would make any sense of either, done by me, but at least I’m not trying to sucker the public with them.
A related complication is the piles of….baloney generated by the artists and their critics, to “explain” their stuff. I had an art teacher a few decades back who not only did stuff that made me scratch my head but wrote the same way. It put me off art…for a while. I dropped out of school because not prolific enough but also not able to do…baloney. Still, I find [and do] things I like, as do you, and that’s what counts…-
There is some weird stuff out there, I must admit. The most head scratching thing I’ve ever seen was a piano covered in fur. To each his own, I suppose.
