Recently a rogue employee at Twitter deleted Donald Trump’s account on his or her way out the door. For 11 glorious minutes, sanity was restored to this country. It was wonderful. That employee will probably never have to pay for a drink in a bar again.
Since then, the news has been focused on the lack of security at Twitter. How dare anyone delete this account? Well, yes, Trump violates their terms of service on a regular basis, but still…
Personally, I think the focus should lie elsewhere. The presidential office should not be used as a bully pulpit, and there should be no forum that makes it easy for him to do so. His 140 character missives do nothing but cause chaos.
Here’s what Trump doesn’t seem to get: Tweets are not policies. They’re not legislation. They’re not budgets, they’re not directives, they’re not orders. They’re opinions.
In this case, they are the opinions of an overly-powerful, emotionally unstable little man with poor impulse control and an apparent inability to sleep through the night. They come off as the temper tantrums of a toddler. You couldn’t get farther away from reasoned discourse if you strapped a rocket to your butt and aimed for the moon.
Tweeting is Trump’s way of meddling in things that are well out of his sphere of influence, such as the verdicts of judges. I know competence takes effort, but perhaps if he attempted it now and again, he’d be too busy to stick his porky nose where it shouldn’t be.
That rogue employee deserves a medal. He or she simply told Trump what the vast majority of people in this country have been longing to say for months now: STFU and do your job. How’s that for a tweet?
