Entropic Exhaustion

A very cool name for a very scary theory.

That is a very cool name for a very scary theory. In layman’s terms, it’s the heat death of the universe. It seems quite plausible to me.

Basically, if the universe truly is expanding, the thought is that eventually all things will become increasingly colder and more uniform in temperature, and eventually we’ll reach a state in which no more energy will be transferred from one thing to another. No stars will be formed. No life, no nothing. That means everything will come to a grinding halt.

Thoughts like that can keep me up at night. What a scary way to go. Not with a bang but with a whimper, as the saying goes.

The good news is that the current mean temperature of gas across the universe is about 4 million degrees Fahrenheit. This makes me calm down considerably. That means that even if this theory turns out to be the case, we’re still good to go for the next 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years. Give or take. Universally speaking. We’re still in the process of destroying humanity much sooner.

I think I can live with that. And even if I can’t, there’s nothing to be done about it, so no sense depriving myself of sleep. Sweet dreams.
