What do YOU Search For?

After that uncharacteristically upbeat blog entry yesterday, it occurred to me that if I were just randomly searching for stuff to read on the internet, I would never ever find that entry with all its positive tags. Not in a million years. The thing about the internet is that your experience therein is entirely shaped by what you search for.

For example, when I go to Youtube, do I search for love stories and happiness and hearts and flowers? Not really. Sick puppy that I am, I’ll type in stuff like, “Serial Killers”, “Cults”, “True Crime” or things of that nature. Aside from the occasional cute kitten video I see when I click on a Facebook link, Youtube for me is a source of warped and twisted behavior.

On Google, I’ll search for things I’m interested in, of course. But I suppose that means I’m not exposed to things I could very well become interested in, but have yet to hear about. I find that to be kind of sad.

I also notice that I tend to gravitate toward about 10 sites that I’ve come to know and trust over the years. So a lot of my internet experience is shaped by their bias as well as my own. I’ve found a cyber comfort zone. I’ve created my own little cyber reality.

But that makes me wonder . At what point will my creation turn around and start shaping who I am? Maybe it already has. Dun dun dunnnnnn…

Everyone’s internet encounter is completely unique to his or her personality. I don’t know about you, but that makes me wonder what it is that I might be missing.

Like yesterday’s blog entry.

  1. For Sure, Sometimes I feel like a twisted sister. True Crime facinates me,.from the two brothers that killed two cops right down the road from us, to one of the sweetest men I’ve known that murdered his girlfriend with a sword in FL a couple of weeks ago. I am facinated as to what makes them tick, and me tock. I have been on the Internet since ’94,Just the Military, the Greatful Dead and little ole me, when all the sites could be printed off on a 1/2″ stack of papers, now the stacks could fill a museum, I have traveled the world from my chair, seen things I would not have believed if just told. Seen things I wish I could unsee, and grown wiser and more humbe with each search. I cannot even begin to think of all the things to search for. I wish someone would start a search engine “Surprise Me” . But then again, I am surpised everytime I turn my computer on. I’d like to go out and play, but I might miss something.

    1. It never ceases to amaze me how much we have in common. The reason I’m obsessed with serial killers is that I can’t imagine what it would take, what type of brain misfire would be needed to become that kind of monster.

The ultimate “surprise me” site is called Stumble Upon. Check it out if you haven’t already. But even that site asks you what your interests are, so as not to bug you with other stuff.

      1. ☺ It has bled into my library also. I have all the books by “Mindhunter” John Douglas, former head of profilers at FBI whom the Silence of the Lambs was based. All the Body Farm novels by Dr. Bill Bass and Jon Jefferson (signed) and yes, Stephen King, because he does characters better than anyone. What facinates me the most is these men that have dealt with the most horrible crimes and the people that committed them are so gracious and loving, and they try to educate us through their writings Although I have not personally met John Douglas, his letter shows his humor. And Dr. Bass I have met many times and just the greatest communicator. Maybe we must know the worst to appreciate the best. Thanks for the tip, and so many other things.

      2. I LOVE the Jefferson Bass books, and will most likely donate my body to the body farm. Someone may as well have use of it when I’m done.

  2. I never search for anything but research for my writing… because naked pictures pop up when you type anything at all…

    1. Hmmmm… hate when that happens.

      1. uh… me too???
