Naming Yourself

I have never really related to my own first name. And my middle name? It feels downright foreign. If I could have named myself, I would be Serenity. I’d actually legally change it tomorrow if I didn’t think I’d be laughed out of my family. It’s the name I chose for myself in the virtual…

I have never really related to my own first name. And my middle name? It feels downright foreign. If I could have named myself, I would be Serenity. I’d actually legally change it tomorrow if I didn’t think I’d be laughed out of my family. It’s the name I chose for myself in the virtual world of Second Life, and it feels right.

It seems exceedingly strange to me that the one thing you are stuck with for life, the thing that identifies who you are and makes you stand out from everyone else, is the one thing you don’t get to choose for yourself.

Over the years I have come across some really amusing names in Second Life. I started making a list so I wouldn’t forget them. Some of them are well thought out, others not so much. Naming yourself should be serious business because you are stuck with that legacy for life. But one thing I’ve learned from all of this is that if we all got to choose our own names, the world would be a much more interesting place.

Here are some of my favorite Second Life names.

  1. Since 1994 my user and ID and newspaper bi-line has always been nos4nus. It is also my e-mail.
On occassion, I have used OUTTAFOCUS, as with my first attempt to join Second Life. But I recently fell in LOVE with SILLIPAT. The silicon baking mat. I love the idea that I could be heated to the extreme, and nothing would burn or stick to me.

    1. BY-LINE good gosh.

    2. Sillipat. I like it. 🙂

  2. Some of those would be great band names. I already have one since Joehoover is not my name. I did a post on names years ago as something has fascinated me by the topic. I was given Joe as someone I know thought that was my name, it’s Jon, they were almost right. And Hoover as my surname is Dyson which is also a brand of vaccuum cleaner so I was christened by that friend as joehoover. Now everyone here calls me Joe, which has stuck now. Other clsoe friends call me Jonny which I don’t relate to at all, definitely not a jonny and woebetide anyone calling me Jonathan 🙂

    1. Isn’t it lovely when you get an opportunity to use “woebetide”? 🙂 You’ll always be Joe to me.

      1. Joe is fine, I am used to it by now.

It always amazes me when new words make it in the dictionary, Selfie for example and other horrendous ones when there are lovely words w are forgetting about 😀

      2. I agree wholeheartedly. 🙂

  3. Belgian Waffle… ha! I found a Wal Mart employee pin that said: Ask me, I like to help. There was a blank space to write your name. I wrote: O. Phugauff.
At my wife’s high scholl reunion, on my name tag, I wrote: Nobody you know… next time I am going to leave it blank and see how long I can make people try to guess what class I was in.
On a side note, making up alien names for my novels is fun and challenging.

    1. Bonus points for actually GOING to a reunion. I can’t bring myself to do that. I wasn’t happy there the first time around. Why relive it?

      1. I don’t go to mine… I didn’t actually graduate… but we had an awesome unofficial reunion… I need to do a post about that

      2. it is on the list

I love that my name is on this. I love more the fact that a few of my friends are on here as well.

    1. I love that you found it. 🙂
