In keeping with my lifelong tradition of discovering really cool stuff long after it has become a thing, I’ve just stumbled upon a bimonthly podcast called Welcome to Night Vale, and now I’m addicted to it.
Night Vale, it seems, is an isolated little desert town where the laws of physics, among other things one usually takes for granted, don’t exist. The local bowling alley has a entrance into another world. The sky often turns strange colors. The old lady who lives out by the used car lot has angels living in her house who tend to congregate in the living room and block her view of the television. No one is allowed in the dog park, ever, including the dogs. In fact, it’s a good idea not to even think of the dog park. The floating cat in the radio station’s bathroom seems quite content, and it’s best to avoid the mysterious hooded creatures who walk the streets. And each podcast includes a musical interlude that’s strange and fascinating and probably something you’ve never heard before.
Night Vale is my kind of town. It will give you the shivers. After a while you get used to the fact that nothing ever really gets explained. And the beauty of it is that it makes you question reality. I absolutely LOVE questioning reality! It also makes you think. Here are 3 quotes from the program that got me hooked:
- “I think the best way to die would be to be swallowed by a giant snake. Going feet first into a slimy maw would give your life perfect symmetry.”
- “Today is the last day of your life. Up to this point.”
- “Does the carpet match the drapes? No, it doesn’t. You’re the worst interior decorator. Please leave my home.”
